How to Revive Your Weave

Everybody has lazy days. Some of us have lazy weeks or months. I am guilty of all three. What a lot of people fail to realize is that having a weave is much like having to take care of your own. Maintenance is required. Have you ever laughed at a girl from YouTube when she took the extra mile to take care of her weave because you thought she was "doing the most?". We all have, but I can promise you that her weave lasted longer because she took the extra mile. No matter where your weave was purchased, if it is any type of human hair it requires maintenance. You would never go weeks without not washing your hair, deep conditioning or applying a heat protector. If you fail to care for your hair, your hair will fail to care for you. If you notice that your weave is becoming brittle, dry, unmanageable, matted, it may not be the hair, it may be you and what you're NOT doing to keep it fresh. Take a day out of your week to care for your hair. Even if you're busy and on the go, all you need is 30 minutes to make sure that your weave is up to par.

By simply using a heat protector or a serum could help your weave in the long run. Just like the hair on your head, the hair on your wefts require moisture as well. Just because it is no longer attached to a scalp nor is it still alive, it still can get split ends, dry, matted etc. The most important thing about having a weave is that you do not have to go all out and purchase expensive products, cheap products do the job and they do go a long way. Here are a few tips and products that will help bring your weave back to life and help it look fresh.

Disclaimer: This is not guaranteed to work for everybody. Results are contingent upon hair type (virgin, store bought etc.) as well as its current condition.

1. Deep condition your weave. You need to moisture your weave. If it is dry/brittle/matted it could be because its not getting enough moisture. Oil and hair sheen sits on the hair. You need to use something that will penetrate it. When you have free time, do this. You can buy a pre-made deep conditioner such as the Organics Olive Oil Deep Conditioner or Hair Mayonnaise or you can simply mix up some of your cheap conditioners such as Suave or V05 and let it sit on your hair for 10-30 minutes. If your weave is extremely damaged and matted, I would suggest applying heat or going longer.

2. Shampoo. You can opt to skip this step if you'd like (shampoo is known to dry the hair). However, if you are going to shampoo, make sure that it is a MOISTURIZING shampoo.

3. Condition. Use a sleek conditioner. This works on both straight, wavy, and curly hair. It will lessen frizz and matting. Suave has a Sleek Conditioner that is less than $2.00.

3. Heat Protector. If you plan on blow drying or flat ironing your hair, make sure you use a heat protector. This will increase your hairs longevity, prevent split ends and shortening. I am not going to suggest a specific heat protector because they all serve the same purpose. Go with what is in your budget.

4. Wrap it up! Wrap your hair at night or wear a bonnet. This will decrease chances of matting, tangling and static.
